International Conference on Mathematics in (Bio)Chemical Kinetics and Engineering, MaCKiE 2021

From October 25 to October 27, the International Conference on Mathematics in (Bio) Chemical Kinetics and Engineering, MaCKiE 2021, hosted by our university, was held at the The conference was held in Shanghai Zhonggeng Julong Hotel, with 360 participants and 285 registrants. Among the registrants, 47 were from Belgium, the USA, the UK, Holland, Germany, Spain, Hungary, Russia, Japan, Singapore, and many other countries, and 137 were from other enterprises, research institutes, and universities in China. ‍

MaCKiE 2021 is co-organized by the School of Chemical Engineering, East China University of Science and Technology, the Joint State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, the Key Laboratory of Intelligent Manufacturing of Energy and Chemical Processes of the Ministry of Education, the     National R&D Center of Energy Coal Gasification Technology, the Shanghai Frontier Research Base of Industrial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems, and the Center for Computational Chemistry of East China University of Science and Technology. The organizing committee is chaired by Prof. Zhou Xinggui from the School of Chemical Engineering and Prof. Du Wenli from the School of Information Science and Engineering, and the scientific committee is chaired by Prof. Guy Marin from Ghent University and Prof. Qian Feng from East China University of Science and Technology. The theme of MaCKiE 2021 is Mathematical Methods for Challenges and Opportunities of Chemical Engineering. Mass Transfer, Scale and Interface Effects in Chemical Processes, and Chemical Engineering and Artificial Intelligence, with Profs. Gone Xueqing, Wang Fuchen, Liu Honglai, Luo Guangsheng, and Du Wenli as the chairmen of the organizing committee of the section.

Li Tao, Vice President of our university, welcomed the online and offline participants at the opening ceremony and congratulated the successful organization of the conference. He said that mathematics is the whole foundation of physics and physics is the mother of all engineering. The importance of mathematics to chemical engineering is unquestionable. The world is facing major challenges such as resource scarcity, climate change, and population aging. To overcome these challenges, we need math, algorithms and software for technological innovation. More importantly, we need intensive academic exchanges and cooperation at home and abroad.

The conference was originally planned to be held in 2020, but was postponed to this year due to the epidemic. Considering the inconvenience of foreign delegates attending the conference on site and the desire of domestic delegates to communicate face-to-face offline, the conference was conducted in a combination of online and offline, and all reports were broadcasted live. The organizing committee hired the Zoom professional service team to ensure the smooth switching between online and offline reports. Although some delegates could not come to the meeting due to new outbreaks in some parts of China a week or so before the meeting, the meeting was well-prepared and the reports were able to be delivered online, which made the meeting a success.
