On October 23, James Demmel, professor of University of California, Berkeley, and a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Engineering, and the Academy of Arts and Sciences, visited the School of Information Science and Engineering and made an academic lecture entitled Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning and Big Data. The lecture was hosted by Professor Du Wenli, Dean of the School of Information Science and Engineering, and attended by faculty members and students of the School of Information Science and Engineering.
Professor James Demmel introduced the general situation of the Department of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He talked about his team’s theoretical and application research in artificial intelligence, deep learning and robotics and highlighted how to design Communication Avoiding Algorithm from the perspective of saving time and energy consumption. He explained his theory in detail by using two cases with regard to Linear Algebra Calculation and Deep Learning Network Training. Professor James Demmel also carried out interactive discussion with faculty members and students of the School of Information Science and Engineering on a number of issues in the field of artificial intelligence.
